Staying Safe During the Solar Eclipse Mon Aug 21
On Monday, August 21st, North America is in for a rare treat…a total solar eclipse!  The eclipse will take approximately 2 hours and 42 minutes from start to finish. It is understandable that we all wish to experience the beauty of this rare and exciting phenomenon however, any worker who looks directly at the eclipse with a naked eye risks eye damage and possible blindness. For information containing instructions on how to remain safe during the solar eclipse, please see file.

HPAS Adopted a Junction Neighbourhood Tree
HPAS has adopted a tree for our school  with the Adopt-a-Tree Program!
Our Linden tree needs 30 L (or about 7 gallons) of water twice a week! The location of our tree is directly in front of the Junction farmer's market stage area, East of Pacfic Ave., the 3rd tree on the North side of the road. Click this link for the map. Our tree is N18 and is now labelled with our HPAS buttons tied to it's trunk.
If you're in the neighbourhood, drop by and water our tree with how ever much water you can carry! While there,
take a picture of our tree being watered, share it with us on Facebook and Twitter, and tell us how much water you've given it!

Parent Safety Program - 8:30 - 8:55 am, Mon - Fri
‘Choose Safety Over Convenience’
PSP is a community based program with the main purpose of reducing the number of traffic hazards  that  create a safety risk for children when arriving at school. The program creates a designated ‘Kiss ‘n’ Ride’ for the dropping off and picking up of children.
Our program will be active in the morning for Grade 1-8 students on the west side of Clendenan Ave between Annette St and Jennings Ave. Designated signs allow 2 carsto pull into the area.
How does the drop off work?
  1. Pylons and signs mark the drop off area as well as an adult and 2-3 students wearing recognizable safety vests. Pull your car to the front of the drop off area and put it in ‘park’. Parents please do not get out of your car!
  2. Student(s) arriving will undo their seatbelt, open their own door and get out.
  3. All students exit the car on the curb side of Clendenan Ave.
  4. Parent volunteers may help open the car door.
  5. Arrivals are escorted into the schoolyard; older students may walk themselves.

Fidget Spinners + Construction in Gym Fri Jun 2
Dear Parents/Guardians,

There have been many conversations amongst staff about the benefits and concerns of fidget spinners/cubes for students.
Please discuss with your child’s teacher if you feel that a fidget spinner/cube is a tool that would support your child’s learning. This will allow a conversation to take place around guidelines and expectations for their use.  If this is not an agreed upon strategy for supporting your child’s learning, students will be asked to have them put away while in school.
Some safety concerns have been reported in the media as some spinners are not manufactured well and ball bearings have been reported to have come out and caused injuries.

The second item is about a large garbage bin that will be placed by the senior doors for the next 1-2 weeks. This is for the removal of the existing gym dividing wall. It is being replaced with a retractable screen. We will determine on Monday whether that exit will be closed during this time. If this is the case seniors will enter after Junior students at the Junior doors.

Thank you for your support with both of these items. Please speak with myself or Ms Tahirovic if you have questions or concerns.

Nancy

The Highway of Heroes Living Tribute Canada 150 Tulip Drive
CELEBRATE CANADA’S 150th BIRTHDAY BY RAISING FUNDS FOR THE HIGHWAY OF HEREOES LIVING TRIBUTE AND CREATE INCREDIBLE DISPLAY OF FLOWERS THAT ARE UNIQUELY CANADIAN! The Highway of Heroes Living Tribute will see 117,000 trees planted along the 401, from Trenton to Toronto. One tree is being planted for each Canadian soldier that has fallen since Confederation. What better time to get involved with this initiative than the 150 birthday of our country? The Highway of Heroes Living Tribute provided onehundred-fifty special Canada 150 tulip bulbs to Annette and High Park! Our Eco Club has planted them along the front wall, near the Kindergarten and we can't wait to see them bloom in the Spring to celebrate #Canada150.
About the Canada 150 Tulip
The Canada 150 tulip, the official tulip of Canada’s 150th anniversary, has an elegant white bloom with red flames that bears a striking resemblance to our maple leaf flag and also reminiscent of the eternal flame in Ottawa. The National Capital Commission (NCC) partnered with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Home Hardware, exclusive retailer of this special tulip bulb, and Communities in Bloom for the selection and distribution of the Canada 150 tulip. 100% of all funds raised will go to support the Highway of Heroes Living Tribute with ZERO administration costs.

Attention Parents/Guardians of Grade 7 Students:
Did you know that the process for applying to high schools begins in October of your child’s grade 8 school year and that a student’s  grade 7 June report card is very important in the application process?
That’s right- THE GRADE 7 FINAL REPORT REALLY MATTERS if a student wants to apply to any specialized school or program such as Ursula Franklin Academy, Rosedale Heights School of the Arts, Etobicoke School of the Arts, Bloor TOPs, Parkdale Pre-International Baccalaureate, Western Technical Robotics or Design Studio, etc. When grade 8 students apply to high schools,  it is always the grade 7 Final Report Card and sometimes the Grade 8 Progress Report Card which are submitted to high schools.  High schools look at all sections of the report card including the learning skill marks & comments, subject specific marks & comments, attendance & punctuality.

Questions?  Contact the guidance counsellor at  effi.kapoulis@tdsb.on.ca

A note re: Fire Alarms & Pokemon Cards
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thursday`s fire alarm at 3:10 pm alerted us to share the following with you– If you are in the school yard when a fire alarm or evacuation happens, please keep your younger children with you and gather either on the island near the basketball court or around the trees with the benches. Please do not approach the class lines, go toward the school or allow your children to play on the climbing structures. It is important that we are able to account for all of the students and ensure the building is safe before returning to the school. On Jennings Avenue, students exit from the door by the gym. If you are on the steps with your children, please move toward the sidewalk, away from the school when it is safe to do so. If you are staying after school to enjoy the company of  kindergarten friends, you may want to consider going into the FDK play yard (available until 3:45) or staying to one side of the steps so there is a clear path for people exiting the school to walk down. Thanks for your patience as the firefighters and caretakers located the source of the alarm. It was a heat sensor that was activated by being bumped. Great to see how quickly the firetrucks arrived!!

The second request is to encourage your children to keep their Pokemon cards at home or speak to them about not trading them with other students. We have had to navigate quite a few situations where students are upset because of cards gone missing or trades that were unfair! Thanks for your support and understanding.

Food Allergy Canada Presentation Tue Sep 13, 3:45 - 4:30.
Annette Brennan, a speaker from Food Allergy Canada @FoodAllergyCAN
, will come and present to all grades at the school during the day but what’s **new this year** is that we will also have Annette stay and do a presentation for staff and parents/care providers after school. If you have questions or concerns about food allergies in our community, this is the perfect time to ask an expert.  The session will run 30-45 minutes and kid minding will be provided.  Please note that since this session is intended for adults, it will not be suitable for young ears, Annette will talk about death caused by food allergies, so please do take advantage of our kid minding option on that date. If you have any questions about the presentation or would like more information, please contact Parent Council - HPAlt.org

Allergies at High Park & TDSB Schools
As many as 1.2 million Canadians may be affected by life-threatening food allergies and this number is increasing, especially among children. Currently, it is estimated that six per cent of children, or 15,000 TDSB students, have food allergies.
The symptoms of allergic reactions can vary in type and severity, from mild skin irritations and hives to breathing difficulties and loss of consciousness. The most severe reaction, called anaphylaxis, can be fatal. Because allergic reactions are caused by a wide variety of foods it is difficult to ensure our children never come into contact with the allergen responsible for their condition.
A reminder that at High Park we ask that our students do not bring food containing nuts, sesame or coconut. Empowering children with knowledge and understanding of their condition, and of their peers' conditions, is the best way to prevent allergic reactions.

Latex Allergies at High Park
Please note that any loot bags or special treats sent in for birthday parties should NOT have any latex products in them, due to allergies at our school.  Please be aware of latex balloons, erasers, and plastic toys. It is a health & safety concern.
